Assume Your Designer Is Clueless

Basic elements of your company’s services and products may be alien to your designer. Assume your designer is clueless and knows nothing about you or your company. When delivering content, give as much information as possible. Better to have it and not need it then to need it and not have it.

But Don’t Treat Them Like It

It is important that the business owner be involved in the design process and help guide the overall direction of a website but make sure that you listen to your designer.
However, it’s equally as important that you allow your designer to actually design. Hopefully, you’ve spent some time researching your choice of a website designer. Have confidence in your decision.

It’s a common website design mistake to confuse your personal aesthetic, your likes and dislikes, from your customer’s needs. For instance, while you may love your sports team’s colors they are not always the best choice for selling your products and services.

One of the things an experienced website designer knows is that the more time spent critiquing a design by the wrong people the worse that design gets. It’s the old adage of too many cooks spoiling the broth. Where you know the most about your business and products, your website designer will know the best way to highlight your products and more importantly make them user friendly.

It’s equally important to give constructive criticism. Statements like “It doesn’t feel right” and “I’ll know it when I see it.” aren’t very helpful to refine or correct a design. If you give concrete examples, be specific, you will get better results and be less time consuming.
